challenges of rural education in India

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world…
Nelson Mandela

I think there comes a time in every persons life where they just need to go to the darkest, most dismal place.

Economic prosperity and quality education for our children are inexorably linked

Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow

Although Padhdhar Village is equipped with a primary school

  • Infrastructure and teaching methods were largely obsolete. Use of technology was marked by its absence.
  • Quality teachers and quality education was at a premium, largely not visible
  • Fewer committed teachers, lack of proper text books and learning material in the schools were major constraints
  • Use of information and communication technology, digital education is virtually non existent.
  • Attendance of teachers and students was also declining, fear of failure being a major constraint.
  • Student to teacher ratio was a concern
  • Poverty continued to be a bottleneck
  • Imparting education in English , Mathematics and Science were major issues and that defeats the basic purposeThe number of students completing their primary education with inadequate numeracy and literacy skills was startling.
  • Quality related issues are far powerful than poverty. Students were not at all encouraged to think but were asked to memorize pre-defined questions for exams. Neither students nor teachers took any interest in studies which is why the level of education was declining  despite many efforts.
  • Very low number of students actually clearing their secondary education and taking admission in a college for further studies. So the drop-out-rate at the secondary level was extremely high . Only parents who could afford college education would send their kids to secondary schools. If parents are not able to send their wards for higher education then all their previous efforts get wasted as completing just secondary education means a low paying job and the person is again struck in the same never ending cycle of routine and daily survival. Discrimination against the girl child in a largely parochial society also acts as a barrier to the pursuit for higher education and women empowerment

Though some of the students from villages are really brilliant, as they have a wealth of practical knowledge and know how to survive even in very harsh conditions of life, difficultly in understanding their textbooks, lack of facilities, social constraints and their poverty continued to pose hurdles to their education.

The right to a quality education is, I believe, the perfect path to bridge the gap between different cultures and to reconcile various civilizations. Without such a right, the values of liberty, justice and equality will have no meaning. Ignorance is by far the biggest danger and threat to humankind.
